Using exclamation points is alright. Sometimes. But I've seen on every board some people who overuse exclamation points. If your character is excited and happy, you can portray it through actions and words. Using exclamation points is the wrong way to go. [It's a pet peeve of mine, actually, which is why I've posted this.]
wrong; Lauren walked down the hall. She couldn't believe the great weather today! It was amazing! She walked out onto the grounds and smiled as the students passed her. "Hello! Nice day, isn't it!?" She said as she strode by. right; Lauren walked down the hall. She couldn't believe the great weather today, it was absolutely amazing. She walked out onto the grounds and smiled as the students passed her. "Hello, nice day isn't?" She said as she strode by, smiling.
The second example has no exclamation points, but the happiness and excitement is still shown without them.
